The green gold
of the Mani
The Mulberry is surrounded by 180 olive trees. Koroneiki olives, typical of the Peloponnese, grow on the silvery-green trees. They are expertly and lovingly tended by Mani Hospitality throughout the year. Every year in November, the olives are harvested by hand to be processed locally and in the traditional way. The Mulberry Organic Olive Oil.
The olive tree is a symbol of Greece and part of the Greek identity. Since ancient times, it has been considered a sacred gift from the goddess Athena and symbolises peace, wisdom and constancy. Economically, the olive tree is vital: Greece is one of the leading exporters of high-quality olive oil. The Koroneiki olive is considered the „queen of oil olives“. It is famous for its polyphenol-rich olive oil and intense flavour.
Olive harvesting is manual labour
To harvest the olives, the olive trees are first shaken vigorously with olive shakers. The falling olives are collected in large nets and packed in sacks. Every evening they are taken directly to the nearby mill, where after an hour the olive oil comes out of the press, light green and freshly scented. In the mountain village of Stravropigio, the oil is filtered in a state-of-the-art bottling plant and filled into bottles and canisters. The harvest arrives in Germany two weeks later.
